PHOTO OF THE WEEK: CITY HALL

Cityhall

Class & classic -- that's JC City Hall for ya. This photo, taken by Eve Rametta, makes City Hall look like such a lovely place to be ... almost makes us forget about what *actually* goes on inside. Almost.

PHOTO OF THE WEEK: CRANES

Cranes

But where is the crane wife? Ah, yes, bad jokes abound when the Decemberists come through town. But this photo has nothing to do with this week's mega-indie show at the Loew's. But as a crane enthusiast myself, I really dig this photo, taken by Flickr's Ciel_Rouge with a Holga. It's gotta be Bayonne! (They need to make that their city slogan, it's got a nice ring to it, and I can definitely picture it on T-shirts.)

The camera turns around this week, as frequent Photo of the Week-ling Kayt Hester gets snapped by the newly New York magazined/Gawkered/Gothamisted (but still eccentrically facial-haired) Eric Harvey Brown, at Jordan's Lounge in Jersey City. The colors here just pop like corn -- all unusual day-glo neon and such.

Fidelity be damned! Sometimes, you see something on the street, and you don't have your camera. Hence, the wonderful world of camera phones. I'm also a big fan of loose English and open interpretations -- so, you can't bring your smoking dog-cat in the store; or you can't smoke your dog or your cat whilst in said store? Or perhaps you can't smoke, have a dog, or have a cat in the store, but only to the right of this sign?  Needless to say, Designknob was probably so confused by the sign, he most likely fled the store in a ball of confusion.

At first glance, Kayt Hester's photo is a nice, soft, quiet shot of a nighttime snowfall, of which we've had a few over the past couple of weeks. But the details make the photo -- not only the amazing swath of neon light on the left, but the ancient auto in the foreground. All in all, a great shot -- makes us want cookies ... don't really know why.

I've always sucked at concert photography -- of course, I've always kind of sucked at photography in general, so it's really no big surprise that my concert shots would be any different. I think that may have ingrained an unrealized bias against concert photography throughout the years. But I really liked Andrew Chien's shot of emo faves Roses Are Red at The School of Rock in South Hackensack, whether the stolen flash was planned or, more likely, a happy accident.

As we endure our first cold snap of the year, it's worth remembering people who are homeless. Pat Marella clearly took this shot before the weather took a turn for the worse, and we hope that this man, and other folks who live on our streets have found a warm place to be. If you're looking for an easy (and fun) way to help the homeless, consider checking out "MusicFest for the Homeless," which will be Jan. 31, from 7-11 pm, at Victory Hall in Jersey City. There will be live music and a raffle, and all proceeds will benefit the Hudson Alliance to End Homelessness in Hudson County. For more, visit BrightMoment Meetup.

PHOTO OF THE WEEK: THE PAPER WASTE

Thepaperwaste

Sometimes we find a photo in our photo pool that, for whatever reason, just works thematically. This photo of the Grove St. PATH stop, by Eric Harvey Brown (Flickr's "Dogseat") seemed like the perfect photo to pick this week, as two free publications will no longer be available to litter our public space, Exit and yours truly, City Belt. The decision to indefinitely cease the print edition of City Belt was multi-faceted, but mostly involved money, cheese, scrilla, or whatever you want to call it. However, with us freeing up that massive amount we had been using to kill trees each month, we can now focus on improving the site, compensating contributors better, doing more in-depth investigative stories and the like. We decided that, rather than turn into businesspeople and worry about money all the time, we'd rather get back to why we started this -- because we love good journalism.

Now that that's out of the way, enjoy the photo, you crazy kids.

PHOTO OF THE WEEK: BOB GOES BOWLING

Bobbowling

Jerry Casciano took this photo of Sen. Bob Menendez at a bowling alley in East Brunswick last Saturday. He was there for an annual fundraising bowl-a-thon for the group Democrats 2000. We like the photo because if you didn't know who Menendez was, it would just look like he was serving up some fries or getting ready to spray some shoes. He was in the process of challenging his opponent, Tom Kean Jr., to a bowling match. We're told that he was a pretty decent bowler. Plus he's got some sweet bowling threads.

PHOTO OF THE WEEK: CROOKED LIGHT, CROOKED POLITICS

5yrslater

Of all the photos of the 9/11 remembrance lights we saw this week, we liked this one, taken by Heidi Gutierrez-Pagaduan, the best. We think the camera's distortion of the rising lights goes hand-in-hand with five years' worth of distortion and manipulation of the events of 9/11 by way too many powerful people.
