Thank you for covering the civil union event at Jersey City City hall. Greg and I were part of that history making event. Yes, we
are waiting for the word marriage to be applied to our union but I resent the reporter calling our union "unholy".

I moved here over three years ago when my partner, Greg told me he felt a calling to be an Episcopalian priest. We have been warmly embraced by the Newark Diocese and being a Southern Baptist by upbringing, I have had so much healing happen by their outreach to me and their acceptance.

What we have in New Jersey is anything but
unholy. We are "fortunate" that here we have the government to catch up, not the church. It was not an unholy matrimony at all. It is a holy un-matrimony.

Hi Douglas,

Thanks for writing and for the feedback.

It's interesting that you take issue with the use of "unholy" -- I considered changing that ending, but ultimately decided to let the reporter's original language stay in the piece.

The reason I did so was that I didn't -- and don't -- think she meant "unholy" in the literal sense -- all of us at City Belt very aware that certain areas of the church have been very accepting of LGBT persons, and indeed very active on LGBT political issues. I think what she meant was that the civil unions matrimony, as a political solution, is unholy, and that full marriage rights are necessary. If that wasn't made clear enough in the piece I suppose that's my failure as an editor, and I apologize for that.

Let me know if this clears up what we were thinking on this.

And, last but not least -- congrats! I wish you and Greg the best.

Thanks for the response. I understand where the reporter was headed with the comment, and agree we need to have complete equality. Holy
and unholy are not terms I would use to describe an action of the state. It is nice to know so much support is out there to have 100% equality and have our union be called marriage.
